Self-Lubricating Bearing Solutions

Introduction

Friction is a primary source of energy loss and wear in mechanical systems. Self-lubricating bearings, also referred to as oilless bushings or sliding bearings, are designed to provide stable sliding performance without continuous external lubrication. How Self-Lubricating Bushings Work

Unlike rolling-element bearings, oilless bushings operate through sliding motion and provide lubrication from the bearing material itself. Common technical approaches include:

  • Embedded solid lubricants: Graphite, MoS₂, or PTFE is embedded in a metallic matrix, typically bronze. During operation, a small amount of solid lubricant transfers to the mating surface, forming a low-friction film.

  • Porous metal structures: Sintered bronze or iron bushings contain microscopic pores that are vacuum-impregnated with oil. Heat generated during operation causes the oil to expand and reach the bearing surface; when operation stops and cooling occurs, capillary action draws the oil back into the pores.

  • Layered composite structures: A strong backing, an intermediate sintered bronze layer, and a low-friction PTFE-based sliding layer are combined to achieve low friction and good wear resistance.
